Why Join FIRST Robotics?
What is FIRST Robotics?
The mission of FIRST Robotics is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
FIRST redefines winning for these students by rewarding teams for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.
Why should I be part of a FIRST Robotics Team?
Being part of a FIRST Robotics Team is fun! It is a chance to be part of a team with many other students and mentors with similar interests. The robot may be the most visible part of the team, but not the only part.
Students will work with kits and software that is currently used by industries and FIRST keeps that edge of encouraging teams to design with new tools each year.
I don’t want to build a robot, is there something for me?
Each team is composed of many students with varied areas of interest. Our team has students involved with fundraising, programming, computer animation, CAD (Computer Aided Design), website design, award submission, team safety, iPod app development, electronics, and field construction.
What will I learn being part of the team?
Being part of the team is a chance to use your talents and abilities and learn new ones. Each year, the team is given a new challenge. You will learn to be part of a team, to look and evaluate possible solutions, decide on a solution, design, build and test your solution.
You also get a chance to meet people with similar interests from all over the country at the Regional Competitions and from the world at the Championship.
What is the role of Mentors on the team?
Mentors are facilitators, advisers, coaches, teachers, cheerleaders, and counselors. They lead by example, help to manage the project at hand, and are always proud of their teams’ accomplishments, big and small. Mentors are teachers and engineers, Web designers and machinists, and they fill many roles in support of their teams.
Why should I be a Mentor?
As a FIRST Mentor, you have the opportunity to inspire students and possibly change their lives forever. You have the ability to open a door for them that they may never have thought possible.
What if I’m not an Engineer?
There are many non-engineer roles on a team. These include fundraising, CAD, programming, award submission, web site design, computer animation, field construction, media and much more.
