Why Join FIRST Robotics?

Students

What is FIRST Robotics?

The mission of FIRST Robotics is to inspire young people in science and technology, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

FIRST was founded in 1989 and based in Manchester, New Hampshire. It falls under one of the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

FIRST redefines winning for these students by rewarding teams for excellence in design, demonstrating team spirit, gracious professionalism, maturity, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.

Why should I be part of a FIRST Robotics Team?

Being part of a FIRST Robotics Team is fun! It is a chance to be part of a team with many other students and mentors who have similar interests. The robot may be the most visible part of the team, but it’s not the only part.

Students will have the opportunity to work with kits and software that is used by industries today. While FIRST keeps an edge of encouraging teams to design with new tools each year.

I don’t want to build a robot, is there something for me?

Each team is composed of many students with different areas of interest. Our team has students involved with fundraising, programming, computer animation, CAD (Computer Aided Design), website design, award submission, team safety, iPod app development, electronics, and field construction.

What will I learn by being on the team?

Being part of the team is a chance to use your talents and abilities and learn new ones. Each year, the team is given a new challenge. You will learn to be part of a team, to look at and evaluate possible solutions, and then to design, build, and test your solution. You will also get a chance to meet people with similar interests from all over the country at Regional Competitions.

Mentors

What is the role of Mentors on the team?

Mentors are facilitator, advisors, coaches, teachers, cheerleaders, and counselors. They lead by example, help to manage the project at hand, and are always proud of their teams’ accomplishments, both big and small. Mentors are teachers and engineers, web designers and machinists, and they fill many roles in support of their teams.
